Here is a picture I took at Tybee beach on a very overcast day when we were there visiting this winter. As some of you are aware, I am using this as an exercise to try and learn the software capabilities more than anything else.  In this particular case, besides trying to punch out the texture of the driftwood, and improve the overexposed sky, I thought it might be a good opportunity to try and remove an item and repair the image around it. I also took a close up the lighthouse to have a better resolution to put back into the image in a better spot. It also allowed me an opportunity to repair parts of that image with the items that were in front of it, before I put it back into the original image.

1) Overall thoughts on the clean up around the lighthouse in both aspects?
2) Should the lighthouse be knocked out of focus a touch to account for depth of field?
3) Also thought a 1:1 aspect ratio worked in this case, but not sure if better still in 4:3 and just cropped as needed?
4) Any other thoughts appreciated as well, as I am using these as examples, so any thoughts are worth trying just to get better using the photo manipulation software.

This is a masterful combo. I think the walkway and grasses are a little over-saturated, so my eye is drawn to the "black" line chopping this image in two. In fact, I would open the 3/4 to shadow areas a bit if you wanted to print this image. Compositionally the log points you right to the lighthouse, framing it nicely, but with everything the same weight, what is the subject of the image? Just my two cents....

So Allison, when you say "same weight". do you think that maybe the lighthouse should be smaller in relation to the driftwood? Would that help. Good point about how the boardwalk turned into a dark line almost splitting the image in half. I didn't even notice that effect...

Overall, I like what you've accomplished. The boardwalk cutting a horizontal line doesn't bother me at all, mainly because I see the driftwood first and foremost as the leading lines directing my eyes right to the lighthouse, which is the main focal point. The only aspect which bothers me a little is the sky. I'd have to see a much larger image, to tell for sure, but the sky looks almost more like a painting than a photo. I think the pinks and blues may be a little too saturated.

Your concept is well realized--recomposing to place the lighthouse in a more pleasing location with the driftwood pointing to it and in a way, framing it. Square crop looks good to me. I agree with Allison that the color is a bit too contrasty and dark. Something between the original and your final image might be better. No to defocusing the lighthouse. A good landscape shot will have all in focus from fore to rear.
